The Draw
When a chess games ends in a tie, it is known as a "draw" and is worth half a win. There are 5 ways a game can end in a draw in Tournament play.
By Agreement
Stalemate
Triple occurrence of position
Insufficient material
The "50 move" rule
1. Draw by Agreement: One player offers a draw to their opponent. The opponent may accept or reject. Accept a draw only if is to your advantage
2. Draw by Stalemate: One player cannot make a legal move but is not in check.
3. Draw by Triple occurrence of position. A player correctly claims the position of all pieces on the board has occurred 3 times in the game.
4. Draw by Insufficient material. A player correctly claims a win is impossible because of pieces left on the board. Insufficient material claims include:
King Vs King
King Vs King + Bishop
King Vs King + Knight
5. Draw by 50 move rule occurs when a player claims a draw because the last 50 moves have not resulted in a capture or a pawn move. NOTE: Recorded notation is your best bet for a successful claim.
